SOUNDS OF LIBERATION
Sounds of Liberation is a collaboration between Clovice Lewis and the MAC that honors the Black experience as told through musical genres that have contributed to and influenced contemporary North American music and culture, and the personal experiences of Black musicians living in Lake County. It was supported in part by a grant from the California Humanities .

Sounds of Liberation is a series of intimate performances and conversations with black musicians living in rural Lake County California about their responses to sweeping social events. The project uplifts a hopeful vision of racial and ethnic harmony, and social change. We invite you to join us on a journey to raise awareness and understanding.
The Sounds of Liberation project included hybrid online and in-person performances and conversations with regional musicians sharing their personal artistic journey. Each of our events included a Q and A component, and were facilitated by Lake County musician, composer, and educator Clovice Lewis. All events were open to the public and recorded. *Several videos above are in the process of being edited at higher quality.

Juneteenth Celebration (click here to learn more about Juneteenth)
MAC launched the Sounds of Liberation on Juneteenth 2021. After the conversation between Clovice Lewis and Sabrina Klein, a free Juneteenth Celebration began! It was the first public celebration of the holiday in Lake County. Serendipitously, President Biden had declared Juneteenth a National Holiday just 2 days earlier, and the celebration was a great way to raise awareness, educate, and have a great time. Clovice opened the celebration with an introduction to Juneteenth. An authentic Kenyan meal was prepared by local Chef Feswali Mulanda from Kenya, and celebratory performances with singer songwriter Gloria Scott, poet Georgina Marie, West African dancers/drummers, and Victor Hall and Midnight Sun Massive band (Reggae, Soul, Ska and Calypso Fusion) followed. It was a great night attended by 227 guests!
