MAC offered free exhibit field trips for your students (2024), including pre- and post-visit curriculum materials tied to the exhibit, core curriculum, and ethnic studies standards. Curriculum was differentiated and appropriate for grade levels and abilities. Work created in the studio was returned with students and can be displayed at school.
Raíces Hermosas fieldtrips included an inquiry-based interactive tour through the gallery coupled with artmaking in the studio. Visual Art, English Language Arts and Social Studies standards were all embedded into a rich experience of art and culture , deepened through art making in the the studio. Students benefited from this rich holistic educational experience that sharpens critical thinking, visual literacy and speaking and listening skills. They gained an understanding of Latinx cultural roots and experiences, and through this, better understand one another. Translators were available daily to ensure that all English Language Learners have equitable access to this rich learning experience.
Two classes or groups daily (approximately 60 students) shared a bus and rotated through the gallery and studio over 3.5 hours including a break for lunch. The field trips, and related curricular materials, and teacher training sessions were all free, thanks to a California Museums grant aimed at reaching Title 1 school students and highlighting California’s cultural heritages. The district provided buses and schools and/or families provided lunches.
Pre visit curriculum is available here. Post-visit curriculum materials comprise web-based and printed materials including videos of artists telling their immigration and bi-cultural stories, motivation for their work, and the cultural elements and expressions embedded within (coming soon!).
Raices Hermosas field trips were a rich cultural experience celebrating Latinx culture and uplifting the local growing Latinx population to promote a deeper sense of being seen and belonging. Another key goal of the project was to evoke empathy and deeper understanding of Latinx experiences amongst the non-Latinx population.
Raíces Hermosas also included weekend art making workshops and cultural events featuring local Latinx artists for families at MAC as well as artmaking activities in the community.
