MAC is honored to present WEAVING – Weaving Baskets, Weaving Bridges
WEAVING was year-long project designed collaboratively by Pomo Culture Bearers and MAC team members that took place from Nov 2021-Oct 2022. The project culminated in the Earth, Sky and Everything in Between exhibit which featured the work of 31 contemporary Native American artists, curated by Corine Pearce. This is the first exhibit of work by contemporary Native American artists in Lake County, and the first exhibit curated by a Native American in Lake County.
WEAVING was supported in part by a grant from the California Arts Council, a state agency. Learn more at arts.ca.gov

WEAVING, Weaving Baskets, Weaving Bridges opened on November 20th with Speak of Who We Are, a presentation by Tribal Elder Millie Simon from the Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians, and Corine Pearce, Basket Weaver and Cultural Educator from Redwood Valley Little River Band of Pomo Indians. A multifaceted project, WEAVING uses the art of basketry as a vessel for healing and understanding through the holistic practice of weaving – from native plant cultivation and preparation to weaving in community.
WEAVING workshops and presentations took place from Nov. 2021 thru Oct. 2022. The project comprised eight basketry workshops led by Corine Pearce, six at MAC and two at Tribal community festivals.  Presentations by Indigenous cultural educators and artists provided historical and cultural context including storytelling, poetry readings, artist presentations and Traditional Ecological Knowledge .  A small demonstration garden of native plants used for basketry was planted at MAC to facilitate plant identification.

WEAVING culminated in Earth, Sky, and Everything in Between at MAC, the first exhibit of contemporary Native American Art in Lake County, and the first to be curated by a Native American here. Pomo basketry exhibits featuring baskets normally in storage were on view at Lake County’s three historical museums.

“I am involved with this project to bring an awareness and appreciation of our ancient culture, which is still very present in Lake County, to the wider community,” said Rose Steele, Cultural Educator from the Elem Tribe serving as project and outreach coordinator. “Despite its ancient roots, our culture is mostly unknown to those who are not part of it...  An important part of advocating for cultural resilience is building and strengthening relationships between the native and non-native communities to facilitate generations of cooperation in the future.”

The MAC acknowledges that we operate on the unceded ancestral lands of the people known as Pomo, Wappo, Wintun, and Lake Miwok. Their descendants, the Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California Nation, live here today.
They are the past present and future stewards of this land.

We stand in solidarity with the First People recognizing the great harm done to them here, as well as their resilience. We pledge to continue to build authentic relationships and work together with them through creative action, towards healing both the land and the people.

We also recognize that our work is but a small step towards reconciliation and that there is much work to be done.
El MAC reconoce que operamos en las tierras ancestrales no cedidas de los pueblos conocidos como Pomo, Wappo, Wintun y Lake Miwok. Sus descendientes, la Nación Middletown Rancheria of Pomo Indians of California, viven aquí hoy.
